MULLENSCOTE BLOG - APRIL/MAY 2011

[Back to blogs >]

Hi Everyone! What a perfect time of the year this is to train our dogs. The driest Spring for years has been a delight for our team and dogs alike. It's at this time of year, with the cool mornings and the light evenings, that I get most pleasure and success in developing my dogs.

Here's a brief roundup of what's been going on at Mullenscote and what's planned for the near future. As always, we'd love to hear back from you with any suggestions as to how useful you find this monthly piece together with any suggestions as to how we might improve.  Enjoy...! Annie

Mullenscote Website gets a Thumbs Up!

Thank you to all of you who have commented on our new Mullenscote web site. Comments and suggestions have been overwhelmingly positive so, whilst it's still all new to us, we must be doing something right! We're learning fast about just what can and should be on the site. One of the suggestions we're going to put in place soon is to post more photos of our training events and country shows/fairs where we have appeared, so that there will be a gallery for everyone to check if they and their dogs are featured. In addition, we've decided to provide you with copies of any photos that may take your fancy -  free of charge! Anyway, keep on sending us your feedback and suggestions, and we'll keep working on the web site too so that it becomes a user-friendly source of news, advice and information for gundog owners, enthusiasts and trainers alike!

And the Gold Medals Go to...

We've had some brilliant results following the latest of our Bronze, Silver & Gold courses that ended recently. All 15 handlers and dogs passed - with 2 passing at the prestigious Gold level, 4 at Silver and the remainder at Bronze. Well done everyone! We were absolutely thrilled to have witnessed the fantastic progress that dogs and handlers made during the course. The groups gelled really well with everyone encouraging and helping each other along the way. There was plenty of fun and laughter - as well as lots of hard work too. Many handlers have signed up to the next course to attain the next level, so we're looking forward to welcoming our new friends back to Mullenscote soon. See below for the full "Roll of Honour" and future course details. Read more about the awards by reading Howard's blogs on the Horse & Country website here >

News of even more success! Iain Brothers and Ollie, his Golden Retriever, now lead the BASC & Chudleys Scurry league. With a staggering 11 x 1st places, 4 x 2nd places and 4 x 3rd places, Iain has notched up the impressive (unbeatable?) score of 450 points in the league table. A huge "Well Done" to both Iain and Ollie!

Gundog Training Courses at Mullenscote

Here's a quick overview of the courses we have planned in the near future together with some guidelines for entry requirements. If in doubt, give Howard or Annie a call and they'll be happy to advise:

In addition to the courses above, we continue to offer one-to-one lessons for dogs and handlers to meet your specific training needs. More details can be found at here but please call the office if you would like us to tailor a package to meet your requirements.

Hollywood Comes to Mullenscote - again!

Encouraged by the response to the launch of Mullenscote's new training DVD "Establishing the Basics", Howard has been busy filming the sequel to his blockbuster!  The weather has been so much better this time, so the 2nd DVD is bound to be even better. Howard assures me that "it's a wrap" and "it's in the can" (I think that means he's finished!) so after it's all been edited the sequel will be released in the near future. Watch out for next month's blog for details...

Fell does us proud!

We have a lovely new litter of Working Cocker Spaniel pups! Our delightful little bitch Fell had five bonnie pups, so we will keep you posted on how they are developing.

Mullenscote Gundogs on the Road...

The Mullenscote Team are on the road again putting on demonstrations, running gundog clinics, assessments and offering plain good advice to anyone visiting the forthcoming shows all around the country. Here's just a snapshot of where you'll be able to find the team in the next 2 months or so. Look out for the Mullenscote lorry and tent, drop in to buy a training DVD, ask advice on any training issue or just pop in to have a natter! We'd love to see you and your dogs!

Mullenscote Invests in the Future of Game & Wildlife

Teaching is an integral part of each day at Mullenscote dog training centre. This month, we were joined by students from Sparsholt College studying for the National certificate in Game Keeping and the National Diploma Game & Wildlife. The students have 4 days practical work with dogs, working towards understanding the skills needed to train them for the shooting field, care and kenneling. Most importantly, they are trying to gain some of the skills they will need to become a teacher of their own dogs and working companions. These days give the students a unique insight to the world of working dogs.

And Finally...

This fantastic weather has been great for training our dogs - but it can have its downside too. Fleas, ticks and mites are all in abundance at the moment - and all of them can cause problems for your dog. So, whatever preventative treatment you choose, keep your dog protected from these unwanted visitors. I know that treatments can be expensive, but, in the interests of both the long term wellbeing of your dog and your wallet, it's a wise investment to ensure you have a happy and healthy dog.

Keep an eye out for more news on the website. Hope to see you soon at Mullenscote. Until then, Keep Training!
